On May 4th, 2020, the Met steps remained empty, absent of what is ordinarily the fashion moment of the year for celebrities and designers alike.
Although the star-studded party is traditionally accompanied by an exhibit in the museum for months afterward, many of the art pieces of this soirre are seen the night of the event.
Each year, a unique theme inspires iconic outfits that push the boundaries of fashion.
This year’s theme, About Time: Fashion and Duration, has an exhibit that pays homage to fashion’s relationship with history, which will be shown at the Metropolitan Museum starting in October.
Despite the postponement of the event, some celebrities still took to social media to recreate Met Gala moments.
But the virtual effect is different than seeing the looks live on the staircase that transcends the museum’s entrance.
At the 2019 Met Gala, the interpretation of Camp was widely adopted, and thus produced a variety of looks.
Billy Porter defined a new Met Gala standard, by arriving on a platform carried by six men.
Beyond this dramatic entrance, his bejeweled catsuit outfitted with 10-foot wings and a 24-karat gold headpiece mimicked an ensemble that he deemed the “Sun God.”
Meanwhile, Jared Leto accessorized with his own head, courtesy of Gucci.
Here are some of the jaw-dropping looks from last year’s event:
