Snowy ancient citadel in Uzbekistan with darker colors

The Silk Road Revival

According to one 11th-century legend, the Ark of Bukhara was an ancient citadel built by the epic hero Siyvush.

This striking image shows a corner of this once-operated fortress that was destroyed in the 1920s by the Bolsheviks after the Bukharans took to the citadel for protection.

Located in Uzbekistan, this fortress is one landmark of many that dots the countryside and represents its dazzling history.

As this central Asian country was once part of the Silk Road trek, mountain ranges tower over former bustling trade cities that take present-day travelers back to a distant past.
