Plastic Waste Whale Breaches in Bruges

Plastic Waste Whale Breaches in Bruges

During the Bruges Triennial, festival commissioner Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang of StudioKCA, worked together to create a four-story whale in one of the Bruges’ main canals.

Made out of nearly five tons of plastic waste pulled out of the Pacific Ocean, this sculpture served as a stark reminder of the 150,000,000 tons of plastic waste still swimming in our waters.

When discussing the project, Klimoski stated, “A whale, breaching from the water, is the first ‘skyscraper of the sea,’ and as the largest mammal in the water, it felt like the right form for our piece to take in order to show the scope and scale of this problem.”
