Shredded Masterpiece: Getting Banksy-ed
On October 5th, 2018, Banksy’s well-known 2006 spray-painted stencil, “Girl With Balloon,” was sold for $1.4 million at the Sotheby’s auction house.
Then, it was immediately shredded on the spot. Banksy later released on Instagram, a video of a hooded figure fitting a shredder into the frame of this famous painting, with the text appearing on the screen reading “In case it was ever put up for auction.”
Rumored to now be worth more than before the artist’s chaotic intervention, the reception to this action was generally positive amongst the art world.
The notorious street-artist has been making waves in the industry for years and intentionally creates work that has a political message.
