The Pearl: An image of a breaching shark went viral.

The internet went into a frenzy when a photograph of a breaching shark was released in August 2020. The image known as The Pearl, was taken by photographic artist Chris Fallows. (Photo Credit: Chrisfallows.com)

This photo effortlessly catches the scene of a shark breaching the sea’s surface. A breach is the term used for when a whale or shark ‘jumps’ out of the water and into the air momentarily. This particular photo is thought to have captured the highest recorded shark breach ever – at a massive 15ft (4.5m) above the waves.

The photograph was taken by Chris Fallows, over the waves close to Seal Island, South Africa, in August 2020.

This stunning imagery of a Great White Shark suspended in the air quickly spread online and was eagerly compared to Damien Hirst’s ‘…Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)’.

Hirst’s controversial installation showcased a tiger shark in a vitrine of formaldehyde for preservation – similar to how Chris’ photography preserves this majestic scene.
