How to Use Hashtags on ARTMO

Hashtags allow you to categorize the contents of your network and to find more content. In Online Marketing, they also help you boost your outreach. On ARTMO, hashtags are unknown territory, fresh and full of possibilities. But hashtags are not new. They have been around since 2007, first on Twitter, then on LinkedIn and Instagram as well. The questions now are: What difference is there and how to use hashtags on ARTMO?

This guide will help you understand what hashtags do and how you can use them to become more visible on ARTMO.

1. What Is a Hashtag?

A hashtag is a term of one or more words that is highlighted by an anteceding hash sign. The users of a social media platform put it into their posts to categorize their content. Usually, the hashtag becomes clickable when posted and leads to a list of posts that contain the hashtag.

The meaning of the word “hashtag” therefore is a compound of a hash sign (#) and a tag; a term or label referring to a specific kind of content in order to help future searches become more easy (on a blog, for example).

2. What Are Hashtags for?

The hashtag feature, which has already become quite popular on other social media platforms, is also available on ARTMO. Of course, it can only be useful to you, if you know how to use the feature according to your marketing goals. Part of it includes whether hashtags align with your goals or not.

Therefore, let us first look at why hashtags are used in all the other online communities: The feature helps the network to

  • search and find content of interest or need
  • increase the visibility past their followers to a larger audience, specifically to their target group
  • engage their followers with relevant and categorized content
  • build (the image of) their brand by joining a trending conversation or by starting their own promotion campaign
  • support a social cause or spread information regarding social issues
  • make full use of a post’s limited space by adding a context
  • check out their competition

As you can see, there is a lot you can do with simply using hashtags on other networks. While this may be the same intention for its implementation on ARTMO, the future has yet to show statistics matching this list of benefits.

3. Why Use Hashtags on ARTMO?

You probably would like to explain me by now that you do not know anyone using hashtags on ARTMO. So how can those benefits align with ARTMO and why should you try it? Even Elena Picchi states in her excellent article about How to Make Money as An Artist that hashtags “might get you dizzy”, leading to the conclusion that you will not have to bother with such things on a dedicated platform such as ARTMO. In other words: Why should you spend your time on an unused feature?

It is simple, really. Where other platforms perform poorly by overloading your social feed with content, ARTMO provides you an opening. Firstly, ARTMO’s hashtag feeds are almost empty, most likely due to its current network size. This is good because it means that you are seen no matter how often you post. If your posts are qualitative on top, users will undoubtedly click through to your profile. Secondly, ARTMO’s hashtag feeds only include posts containing hashtags. It doesn’t add those that contain them as keywords which is a huge filter. Thirdly, the hashtag feature is free.

In sum, the feeds will not make you dizzy. In order for it to stay that way, however, everyone has their part in ensuring the quality of their posts and to carefully think of a posting strategy. And what’s more important: A part of marketing is to identify a gap and then fill it first.

What I have furthermore found on Google makes me think that ARTMO is actively working towards bringing this feature to its full potential. Read ahead.

4. A Google Search Lets You Hope for More

After conducting a Google search, I can tell that a bright future is waiting ahead for hashtags on ARTMO. For example, the first SERP (Search Engine Results Page) displays a page named Hashtags – ARTMO as well as 2 subpages called Team Archives or Best Archives. While the two latter indicate lists of hashtags that are still outstanding, the first page seems unavailable. Since it is indexed on Google, I assume the page has been created, however, is kept invisible for the “normal” ARTMO user.

Interesting is not whether it is incomplete. It is interesting that an active effort is being made. After my research, I reached the conclusion that ARTMO is working on a better access to hashtags which is great news because it means using hashtags will be easy in the future.

5. How to Use Hashtags on ARTMO

If hashtags are a part of your Social Media Marketing strategy, you want your hashtags to be good. But what is a good hashtag? In the following subchapters, I will guide you through some best practices for using hashtags. I will also help you understand how hashtags work on ARTMO.

5.1 Where Do You Place the Hashtag?

You can effectively put hashtags everywhere you can interact with other users which would be first and foremost your activity posts or comments.

Where you best place the hashtags within your post is different for every online platform. Having a quick look at the examples of Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram will give you a better idea.

  • Since space is limited on Twitter, an amount of 1-3 hashtags is recommended. There are 2 ways in which you can enrich your posts with hashtags: First is to make the hashtag a part of your text (My #artwork is finished!). The automatic font color change makes them good highlighters. Second is to place them at the end of the post (My new painting is finished! #artwork).
  • LinkedIn is a professional network that focuses on the quality of content. Therefore, it neither supports color change nor free positioning. The recommended amount is 3 to 6 hashtags at the end of the post.
  • On Instagram, however, guides tell you to add as many hashtags as possible at the end of your post to increase your outreach significantly. Here, where you easily consume many pictures per second, every view is a potential hit.

With this in mind, let us get back to ARTMO. Compared to Twitter or Instagram, ARTMO’s goal is to connect art sellers and buyers which brings it closer to LinkedIn standards. You can also see it in the way the hashtags look like: Their font style is bold, yes, but they do not make for good highlighters. This leads me to the conclusion that you should put the hashtags at the end of the post, sticking to 3 to 4 hashtags as an appropriate amount. Ultimately, avoid spam!

5.2 What Makes the Hashtag Work?

A working hashtag is clickable and leads to a list of posts containing the hashtag. If your post is not displayed in the list, you probably have published it in a group.

If you follow these 2 tips, your hashtag works.

  • Add the hash sign (#) prior to the tag. Make sure that there is no space in between the sign and the tag you are using. Make it #art, not # art.
  • Do not use any punctuation, spaces or symbols within the tag. You will split the term up and create a hashtag you did not want to use. Make it #ArtWork, not #art work or #art.work.

Important: The clickability is rather unstable at the moment which makes it highly likely that hashtags are still under development. I have written more about this assumption under “Linked Vs. Plain Text Hashtags”.

5.3 What Is a Good Hashtag?

It is not only important that your hashtags work, but also that they are of quality. This includes their readability and their relevance to your content and Social Media Marketing strategy.

Apply these 5 simple tips and you will have good hashtags:

  • Add relevant hashtags to your post: What is your topic really about?
  • Make use of specific hashtags which help with the categorization: On an art network, do your followers search for #art or a #sculpture?
  • Avoid long hashtags. Short hashtags are easy to remember and more attractive to re-use: Do you prefer #ThisIsMyBestArtInYears or #MyArt?
  • Start every word in a hashtag phrase with an uppercase to make it more readable: Avoid #artprogress, apply #ArtProgress.
  • Do not spam. Make it easier for the community to choose which hashtag to follow. Give them an amount of 3 to 4. If there will be any spam purges in the future, you will be relieved to have chosen this method.

Enhancing your Online Marketing strategy is highly depended on creating user-friendly content which includes the usage of hashtags. Keep in mind that you do this for humans. Therefore, a good hashtag is relatively short, specific, but easily understood.

5.4 Linked Vs. Plain Text Hashtags

When you start experimenting with hashtags, you will notice that not all of them are linked in your post. After conducting a few tests on this matter, I have found the following:

  • If a hashtag is clickable, its font style is bold.
  • Hashtags posted in a comment are clickable, even though the mouse cursor does not change on hover.
  • The respective post is displayed in the hashtag feed, whether the hashtag is linked or not.
  • Hashtags can be linked in group posts. However, the posts will not be added to the hashtag feed of your network, even if the group is made public.

As for hashtags to be linked, it is likely that the hashtag feature is not fully optimized yet. The many tests I have conducted all show different results. For example, depending on how I switch the hashtags around, different hashtags are clickable. There is also no clear limitation as to how many hashtags are clickable in a post. In my test with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 hashtags, only the first one was not linked each time. There also seems to be an issue with hashtags closely related to each other.

In this example, #art and #artist are understood as the same hashtag. Switching them around does nothing. Only by deleting #art from the post, the system recognizes the #artist hashtag.

As you can see, there is still room to grow. If it does, I will describe it to you here.

5.5 How to Follow Hashtags

It is rather easy to see whether a hashtag feed exists for a linked hashtag or not. You click on it and will see it for yourself. Either you see some posts already such as in #art or, if anything, you see the tag following the hash sign: #art.

I am sure that even non-linked hashtag feeds will become easily accessible soon. As for now, you can check whether a non-linked hashtag exists by entering its URL like this: https://artmo.com/wall/?hashtag=art

In order to check a different hashtag than #art, you simply have so switch the “art” tag with another (without its hash sign). An example could be: https://artmo.com/wall/?hashtag=sculpture

If there is no tag shown in the hashtag feed, but a sole hash sign (#) as title, you know that this hashtag has not been created yet.

Unfortunately, it is not that simple to follow a hashtag with your account. If you want to check on a hashtag regularly, you will have to bookmark the hashtag URL and enter it whenever you wish. Otherwise, once you found a hashtag you like, you can directly follow the users using the hashtag.

6. Lists of Hashtags to Use

Since most of the hashtag feeds are empty, you want to start with a hashtag that has a high chance of drawing attention. Those are either hashtags in use or hashtags displayed by ARTMO content such as the trending hashtags.

However, you have to think about hashtags that are relevant to your own art and the content you wish to publish on ARTMO. While the hashtag #art can be considered too broad on an art network, you should ask yourself what genres, styles and techniques you use. Also think about who you want to reach and don’t forget that they are humans like you.

In the following subchapters, I will give you some ideas of already existing hashtags and hashtags that have fared well on other social media platforms.

6.1 Trending Hashtags

Especially now, with not much content being posted, trending hashtags can be the place where the art crowd is gathering first. Not only are they the most popular hashtags in use, but ARTMO also displays a series of 10 trending hashtags already:

You will find the trending hashtags at the end of your right sidebar, usually appearing on pages such as home or buzz.

Granted, the trending hashtags have not changed much since I have noticed them the first time. But what can you expect, if they are not in use? Maybe posting those hashtags more often will stimulate the statistics enough to make them switch more dynamically.

So why do you use trending hashtags in general? Not only do trending hashtags give you an idea of the top discussed topics on ARTMO. They also show what topics the community is currently most interested in. If one of those hashtags works for your own art or content, you should use them to boost your visibility.

Important: If you are tagging along, however, make sure the content of the hashtag fits your post. Some hashtags at the top, especially created for specific purposes such as current events or cultural trends, can be meant in a completely different way. Make sure you check some posts within the hashtag feed first to avoid the kind of attention that can backfire.

6.2 Hashtags for Art

Although the hashtag #art has a good chance of improving your visibility today, you should already prepare for the time when there are lots of posts on a daily basis. By then, a broad hashtag such as #art might be too popular for you to stay visible.

The sooner you start growing the hashtag feeds that are directly connected to the art you create, the better you will handle the changing times. It will help you to be consistent with your content. Good examples from the trending hashtags are #photography, #sculpture, #WallArt or #collage.

Apart from the trending hashtags, you should look out for the genres artists can add to their artwork sales:

On the genre’s page, you can find keywords categorized by genre, media and time period. Not all of the keywords on the list have respective hashtags yet, “Pop” and “Native Art” for example.

When you add genres to the artworks you upload to the ARTMO shop, they will also appear on your profile. Make use of them when you are sharing your new artworks on your activity wall.

With time, you can also check what hashtags other artists have been using to find more inspiration for yourself.

6.3 Broad Vs. Niched Hashtags

Nothing explains the difference between broad and niched hashtags better than a check on pre-existing hashtags based on what other networks seem to prefer about the art industry. The chance is that people transferring to ARTMO are already used to specific hashtags. Because they have already decided that they are appropriate for their content, they probably use them automatically for their posts on ARTMO. Hashtags such as those can bring the right crowds together intuitively and effectively.

Broad hashtags are #art, #artist or #MyArt. Even #creative, #color or #beautiful can become broad hashtags in the future. Better and more niched hashtags, which can be sourced from a list of successful hashtags on Instagram, are #watercolor, #ink, #sketch, #pencil, #drawing, #GraphicDesign or even tools such as #photoshop. Currently, the hashtag #StreetArt is quite popular on Instagram.

The bigger the crowd gets, the better it is to use niched keywords. However, if the context fits, you can add broader hashtags to paint a more complete context for your posts.

Let’s say you publish 3 different types of content on ARTMO: your new artworks, progress updates and something regular to keep your audience engaged, one sketch every Monday. In this example, you have 3 categories of posts you might want to tag with a broader hashtag: #artwork, #ArtProgress or #MondaySketch.

Now let’s say you do not want to make your audience feel dizzy and decide to keep it at 3 hashtags per post. You want to write about your new artwork and specify its content. Therefore, you add the hashtags #artwork, #OilPainting and #MagicalRealism to your post. Easy, right?

6.4 Special Hashtags

Some of the hashtags used are directly related to events, promotion campaigns or social causes. #ArtCanHelp, for example, is a hashtag initiated by The Art Newspaper containing good news all around the art world. With the Corona virus being a present issue, the hashtag #MuseumFromHome has become quite successful, too.

Moreover, there are hashtags connecting people by sharing more fun-related content such as #ArtSelfie, #MuseumSelfie or #PartsOfPaintings.

There are many ways in which you can connect to art lovers of the same interests. Both your creativity and your strategy can give rise to successful hashtags.

6.5 Hashtag Creation

If you already have an idea, creating a hashtag is easy. Making it popular, however, requires time. I will show you what I mean.

In order to create a hashtag, you first have to come up with a good one.

  • Think of your goal behind the hashtag: What shall it accomplish?
  • Make sure it is relevant to this goal, easily understood and memorable. What describes it best?
  • Make it short: Do not put too many words together.
  • Try to find a term that is neither too broad nor too narrow.
  • Remember also not to use any punctuation, symbols or spaces.
  • Type the hash sign in front of the tag.

If you made your decision, create a post befitting your goal and add the hashtag you have chosen. The moment you save your post, the hashtag has been created and its list will show your post.

In the same way, I created the hashtag #MyFirstPost. I have already seen this custom on other networks and found it quite helpful as a rookie. So why not try introducing yourself, telling the ARTMO world that you are here? Members searching for dedicated new artists can profit from this as well.

Surely, the question of its (future) popularity depends on how many of you are willing to use this hashtag. Since I do not intend to rub this under your nose, I keep my efforts short. See?

7. Engagements Through Hashtags

Now that you know how to write and create a hashtag, how can you grow your followers’ engagements with it? Well, the engagement does not come from the hashtag itself. It comes from the quality of your post and from your post being more visible to the community. Thanks to the visibility, you are able to invite users (later maybe beyond your followership) to engage with your post.

But there is also value in a follower or user seeing a hashtag in your post:

  • They can click it to browse more posts about the topic they are interested in.
  • They can save the hashtag feed in order to stay updated about its content and, therefore, see your own posts more often.
  • They may decide to use the hashtag in their own post, therefore contributing to the popularity of the hashtag.

A thought: If they place a comment under your post, it could further lead to your post becoming more visible to others. I am writing “could” because this has yet to be tested in a more crowded hashtag feed.

There is also the question of awareness. What can you do, if your target audience does not know the hashtag you are using exists? Here a few tips that are free:

  • Post the hashtag visibly on your profile, explain its purpose and invite your readers to join you. At the same time, post content using this hashtag.
  • View other profiles (your target audience and other artists for whom the hashtag may be relevant) and connect with them.
  • Talk to your connections directly.

As a general tip for engagement to happen, it is important that you create content that your target audience finds interesting, funny or helpful. It is not the hashtag alone that does the job.

8. Mentions on ARTMO

In general, a mention is a username that is preceded by an at sign (@) and that automatically links to the user’s profile after its publication in a post. In contrast to a normal link, the concerned user is notified of the mention at the publication.

On ARTMO, mentions work somewhat differently. For this, you take the full name of the user you want to mention. You can find it next to the user’s avatar on their profile or wherever the user is identified as author such as in posts, comments and articles.

You will not require any at sign, other symbols or spaces.

When you have found the user’s full name, you simply type it into the text field and publish your post or comment.

The mention will neither be highlighted in the text nor will it be linked. It will look like any ordinary text. The user who was mentioned, however, will receive a notification via the “Notifications” window found in the main navigation.

Note that you cannot mention yourself.

Using mentions, you can lead your connection’s attention to the post or comment you mention them in. Of course, you should not overuse the feature. Make sure that the content is really relevant for the user you mention.

9. Account Settings: Public Activity Wall

Since we are already in the settings of your profile, take a look at your privacy options next.

If you want to improve your outreach to potential buyers, you should not be hiding your activity wall. If your activity wall is hidden, other online users cannot see your posts. If they cannot see your posts, they will not see you (or your effort in choosing great hashtags).

You might also want to check whether you want your profile itself to be public. Since your activity wall is simply a part of it, it might be hidden regardless of your choice to show it.

This is for your activity wall. But what about group posts? I also tested hashtags in a public group, but the hashtag being used does not make the post appear in its respective feed. Therefore, there is no additional visibility gained by using hashtags in group posts as of today.

10. Conclusion of Hashtags on ARTMO

Not many users have tried hashtags on ARTMO as of yet. If you are unsure whether to pursue this way of outreach or not, let me say this: You are on ARTMO, not on any other bigger, dizzier platform, aren’t you? This is because you instinctively know (or at least hope) that this newer platform will provide you the opportunity to grow quicker. An opportunity you do not have on a packed social media platform. The same goes for its hashtags.

Of course, compared to usual ARTMO promotion functions, you may find hashtags to be slightly complex, especially in regard to accessing hashtag feeds. However, hashtags stabilize your promotion efforts to a certain extent. You probably have seen artists being displayed on the starting page at random as well as new collections in your sidebar. I am not saying that this is all the promotion you can do on ARTMO. There really is a lot more.

I am saying that hashtags give you the opportunity to let you be found through hashtag lists. Not when you “happen” to appear, but when you wish to do so.

The best step towards making this possible is to start with pre-existing hashtags for which you should check trending hashtags or genres. Make sure they are relevant to the content you post and the art you create. It is quality over quantity.

There is a good chance that the broader hashtags become the most popular first since they allow the outreach to larger audiences. Make sure to be consistent and to add specific hashtags to your posts.

Most likely, hashtags on ARTMO are still under development. Although it might not seem too successful to use them already, there is also the possibility that being one of the first today will be equal to one of the top very soon.

11. A Few Final Words

I hope that my guide could help you understand hashtags better. I also hope that my tips and ideas will make it easier for you to use hashtags in the future.

As for now, hashtags only work within your own network.

This means that you can categorize the content posted by the users you follow. You cannot view posts through hashtag lists that go beyond your network yet. Your best strategy at the beginning would be to follow and be followed by as many users as possible. This way, you can find more posts by hashtag and you will be found more often by hashtag. Currently, finding users of your target group works best through groups or filtered searches within the user directory.
