  • African Jolly Boy

Michael Bello • Abeokuta • Nigeria

2019 • Oil and melt on canvas

    121.92 x 152.4 cm

Title: African jolly boy (boy and butterfly) Medium: oil, acrylic and melt on canvas Size: 4feet x 3feet Purpose: This painting is executed in oil, acrylic and melt on canvas, its targeted at driving us away from the ugly african stories of high rate of deaths, malnutrition and the average poverty-stricken child but to see a more optimistic and brighter side of the african child. Irrespective of color, tribe, nationality, gender, the child should have direct or indirect play access to nature and its habitat, this aids their growing up, adding value to their growth, making their day to day activities colorful and interesting. The butterfly signifies the gentle and harmless nature of little kids and they expect there immediate environment to be so too, tender, loving, warm, accommodating and loving. The average African child has little or no access to beautiful and colorful toys to play with and its only by nature’s grace and chance the african child will come across a butterfly before actually getting grown up to do things alone. • Sense of Self I (Seeking)

Olawunmi Banjo • Lagos • Nigeria

    2018 • Oil on Canvas

    102 x 122 cm

Sense of Self:In our new age of digital world, it is easy to lose identity of who we truly are by distractions, some of the things we feed our minds with and looking out for validation from popular opinions about ourselves and how to live our lives. To a large extent, most of that makes us feel pressured and this has led to high rate of depression, low self-esteem and even suicide in various societies across the world.Often times we go in search of what will fill our emptiness; some of us find security in different ideologies (Ancient teachings, traditions, cultures, religions, nature, sciences, cosmos and others). Most of what we look to, have the same hidden truth; “What you seek is within you".The moment of realization reveals the energy we hold within us and knowing that your higher self is within you. Not knowing our potential only makes us wander; We embrace who we are when we have a balanced sense of self and experience the world without losing touch with who we truly are.We can only help others if we first learn to help ourselves and knowing the countless energy we hold within helps us to experience true nature of existence, happiness, peace, love, equality, freedom and more.

Often I am drawn to certain themes or recurring imagery. Apertures that have a sense of depth or an intense nearness, have been one of these recurring themes. In this series of work, I have developed this into a project examining ‘Windows’ both literally and metaphorically. Windows may be perceived as a viewing aperture that offers a sense of looking out or looking in, to the external or internal, introvert or extrovert. Mostly, this project seems to reflect a sense of looking in but both concepts are considered.
