  • WOMBman!

Michael Bello • Abeokuta • Nigeria

2018 • Oil and melt on canvas

    152.4 x 121.92 cm

Title: WOMBman! Medium: oil and melt on canvas Size: 4feet x 5feet Purpose: The average African woman handles a lot at home and in the society, leaving the woman in a state of single-handedness. The main purpose of the work is to showcase to the entire world the mental strength and position of the African woman. Women, generally are thought and meant to be fragile, soft, utmostly cared for, pampered and embraced, but the case of the African woman is totally different and biased, the African system or society expects the woman not only to be proactive but also productive equally as the man, this painting is geared towards creating a strong impression of the mental ability and “multi-tasking position” of the average African woman. Also to extend a hand of support and help to the average African woman not only in the fulfilment of household duties or chores but also to achieve her dreams beyond her wildest imagination by the international community at large and to appreciate the African woman for bridging the gap of failed or neglected obligations of the weak or less responsible men. #africanart #africanwoman #africanamerican #michaelbello #saatchi #artgalleries #artbuyers #artbusiness #artdealer #artcollectors #artforsale #contemporarypainting #contemporaryartist #un #unescoworldheritage #unesco #unicef #paris #usa #canada #oiloncanvas #artistofinstagram #instaart #painting #exhibitions #artbasel #artbiennale #africanartgallery #artfinder #artlovers

  • Where is the future?

Michael Bello • Abeokuta • Nigeria

2018 • Oil and melt on canvas

    121.92 x 152.4 cm

Title: Where is the future? (beyond sobriety) Medium: oil and melt on canvas Size: 5feet x 4feet Purpose: The painting executed in oil and plastic melt reflects the present state of the most populated African country (Nigeria), the work as seen depicts two classes of inhabitants, the older and the more younger generation, the older generation are expressed and portrayed in a sober, static, and bamboo-like manner which reflects the hopeless state of the average Nigerian, over the years it has been tough and unpleasant, survival of the fittest amidst high rate of poverty and unemployment. To the more younger generation, the story is different, they just want to eat and enjoy the moment having faith in the unseen future and believing a more blissful hope lies ahead of them. A positive change is required to bring the desired result of a better country, lots of question comes to light in the course of this... Will the positive change ever come? Will the change be true positive change? Will these little kids grow up to witness and enjoy positive change? #africanart #africanwoman #africanamerican #michaelbello #saatchi #artgalleries #artbuyers #artbusiness #artdealer #artcollectors #artforsale #contemporarypainting #contemporaryartist #un #unescoworldheritage #unesco #unicef #paris #usa #canada #oiloncanvas #artistofinstagram #instaart #painting #exhibitions #artbasel #artbiennale #africanartgallery #artfinder #artlovers

2014 • mixed media painting on canvas

    91.4 x 5.08 x 152.4 cm

These series of works based on Bombay, tell narratives of a city through its architectural history, following a similar colour palette of browns, greys, copper, blue & white. The blue shapes & colour represent the slums, being synonymous with the tarp covers that make the roofs of the slum housing. Specs of orange painted in some of the works are symbolic of the political influence in the city. Several of the works such as 'Gates to Heaven' are about gated communities that lure people with tag lines such as "Reside in new heights of happiness". Being self-sufficent like small kingdoms they hide the poverty, disparity and filth that surrounds them and promise a better life. Motifs and patterns of Indian design are block printed and painted on contrasted with contemporary designs that reflect the rich culture of the country and my biography as an artist.

Freestyle abstract painting Acrylic on stretched canvas Original abstract painting Modern art for sale Floral abstract art Gold, red, orange and teal brush strokes on canvas Large square abstract art work Sides are painted Signed on the reverse of the artworkAbout my art:The world we live in is made of colour. Colour is what creates beauty, energy. It evokes emotion, it involves feelings. I have always been fascinated with colour and shape. Combining two together, you have unlimited possibilities of creating art. But creating art, or painting in my case, goes deeper than putting two of them together. It starts with emotion or feeling and then it “spills out” on canvas. Some of my paintings are impulse paintings where inner emotion takes over and guides my paint brush, whereas others are journeys, that surprise even myself. Through my paintings I try to express the way I see the world and connect with viewer on emotional level, hoping to capture the moment on canvas.

  • Sense of Self I (Seeking)

Olawunmi Banjo • Lagos • Nigeria

    2018 • Oil on Canvas

    102 x 122 cm

Sense of Self:In our new age of digital world, it is easy to lose identity of who we truly are by distractions, some of the things we feed our minds with and looking out for validation from popular opinions about ourselves and how to live our lives. To a large extent, most of that makes us feel pressured and this has led to high rate of depression, low self-esteem and even suicide in various societies across the world.Often times we go in search of what will fill our emptiness; some of us find security in different ideologies (Ancient teachings, traditions, cultures, religions, nature, sciences, cosmos and others). Most of what we look to, have the same hidden truth; “What you seek is within you".The moment of realization reveals the energy we hold within us and knowing that your higher self is within you. Not knowing our potential only makes us wander; We embrace who we are when we have a balanced sense of self and experience the world without losing touch with who we truly are.We can only help others if we first learn to help ourselves and knowing the countless energy we hold within helps us to experience true nature of existence, happiness, peace, love, equality, freedom and more.
