Work life balance
Dariusz Szmajda-Geck • Wrocław • Poland
2018 • Consumables, plastic notebook covers on canvas
100 x 100 cm
The material I used to create this work are commonly known consumables, namely plastic notebook covers. By taking them out of the context, using their features like color, texture, pliability and transparency, I created compositions which have value of a decoration but at the same time have their narrative.

Leave The Bandwagon, Swimming Against The Tide ( I )
Chika Aneke • Lagos • Nigeria
2013 • Acrylic on canvas
134 x 88 cm
The above seminal art piece which was originally inspired by the electrifyingly mercurial and compelling words of the renowned Civil Rights Movement leader and Wordsmith, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is simply entitled, " Leave the bandwagon: swimming against the tide". It is an interestingly powerful art piece that dwells on the spectacular characteristics of the underwater creatures - the fishes. A careful peek at the picture composition will readily reveal a glaring scene depicting life underwaters where majority of the army of fishes are swimming in the opposite direction. The "rebellious" lonely fish definitely figured out its original destined career path and so decided to swim towards it. This unusual display of courage is more than enough inspiring metaphor for us all if anyone means to succeed in any life's endeavors. Dare to muster the courage as well as the will power to believe in yourself by quitting to flow with the bandwagon to swim against ocean tides despite persistent vicissitudes emanating from tempestuous ocean currents and you will most definitely stand out, for you cannot reach your destiny taking another man's path.

One day I was frying an egg and thought that would make a great face…It bought back memories of when I was a kid….When I was a kid at school we would have to take our lunch box as there were no kitchen or cooking facilities when the dinner bell rang we would all sit on the floor to eat our lunch.Almost every day I had a fried egg on rice, the other kids would say, ‘Ta fried egg again, you will begin to start looking like a fried egg’.
