My work is primarily autobiographical expressing my angst in life’s fragility and darkness. The images are messy, emotional and murky, using layered medium to create a narrative in an ethereal space. My goal is to create works that encompass a world of exaggerated uncertainty reflecting both inner and outer worlds. I draw, smudge, superimpose and re-draw again and again to mimic the emotional distress of entanglements, frustrations, and human instability that exists behind the smiling faces we wear out in public.

About Randi Matushevitz:

Randi Matushevitz is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Los Angeles. She received her BA from California State University Northridge, and her MFA in Painting from the University of Miami. She has exhibited in galleries, museums and art fairs in the US and abroad. Her work has recently been featured in Riot Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, the Huffington Post.  Matushevitz' artwork reflects the fragility of human connectivity and the toll on the psyche that experience costs. Her recent portraits investigate uncertainty, and reflect the reactive mania or calm surrounding layers of wear and tear on the soul as reflected in a portrait of the residual psychic scarification that occurs just getting through each day, month, and year. LA Weekly writer Shana Dambrot observed that the paintings of Matushevitz have "grayer areas of psychological dimensions (which) lend themselves to shades of light and dark; her penumbrous palette tells a lot of the story, signaling the mood." The images are messy and murky, set in atmospheres of exaggerated dark and light painted on canvas with a classical paint application of coats and glazes but with an expressionistic touch to match our anxious age.
