Nhat Tran is known for her abstract urushi paintings and sculptures whose organic and geometric shapes, rich surface patterns, and unusual textures reflect contemporary trends.

Urushi, the Japanese term for lacquer, is made from the sap of an Asian tree that is clarified to transparency and mixed with pigments to yield a variety of colors.

Her artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the U.S. and abroad. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, and Hubei Museum of Art in China as well as of the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. Her most ambitious work has been a public commission received from the Indianapolis Airport Authority: On the Tip of Our Wings,a very large urushi lacquer mural which took her three years, from 2006 to 2008, to complete.
