About Ralf Czekalla

Artist statement

For me, the world is made up of pictures and stories.
As an artist, I try to make the non-obvious behind the things visible to the viewer.
In my artistic exploration of the opposites of reality and fantasy, of what is and what might be, oil paintings are created near the surreal, a combination of familiarity in new, perhaps also unusual contexts full of symbolism that tell a story.
Inspired by the artistic craft of the old masters and the images of the symbolists and surrealists, I try to tie my dreams, feelings and emotions as well as the reflection of my environment into pictorial thoughts and play them on canvas. In the process, the conscious and the unconscious combine to form a symbiosis.
Our present in the 21st century is sober and rational. There is little room for fantasy and stories. For me, art is a counterweight to resisting, coping with, and enduring a possibility of reality.
In that way, my pictures are an offer for the viewer to question the world as it is. But he can just simply delve into them and get lost in them, relive the stories, interpret or interpret them or dream with me and discover one or another new view of the world.
