White Elephant Project

United States2008Incised Grooves on Wooden Relief Sculpture

92 x 2.7 x 53 cm

The above relief wooden sculpted painting suggests central values of quest for meaning, unifying experiential and cognitive quest, the faith based orientation of spirituality and the intellectual groundedness of philosophy across time and space. The majestic elephant, splendid in the white of purity of being, approaches, after a long journey, the orb of life, pulsating with the red of blood, above which stands the spiral of being and becoming, above which is poised a geometric form the stylisation of which evokes the balance of order and change, of stability and transformation, these forms understood here as visual dramatizations of central themes in human life and work. The entire ensemble is alive with symbols fed by Aneke's immersion in Igbo Uli and Cross River Nsibidi expressive systems, evoking aesthetic force and arcane power.
