Philip Rubinov Jacobson Despite his 5 academic degrees including an MFA in Painting & Printmaking, Prof Phil says he learned absolutely nothing about painting at any university. In 1973, blowing off ivy-league scholarships he left the USA to study painting in Vienna, Austria under his mentor, Ernst Fuchs, founder of the School of Fantastic Realism. This is where he met artists that would become life-long friends; De Es, Michael Fuchs, Olga Spiegel, Robert Venosa, Mati Klarwein and a handful of others that comprised the first and finest wave of Fantastic-Visionary painters under Fuchs’ tutelage. In 1997 Ernst Fuchs requested that Prof. Phil formally carry on his teachings in Mische-technique and he has been holding his renowned international painting seminars Old Masters - New Visons'Old Masters - New Visions ever since. In 2012, his partner, Mantra Cora, joined him in organizing and teaching in the seminars. Rubinov's travels have been extensive, including India, where he studied meditation, Eastern philosophy and wandered naked with a band of sadhus in 1978. In 1995, the professor founded and directed the School of Extended Studies at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado where he served as the Dean from 1991-1997. The artist has participated in more than 100 exhibitions and his writings have been read worldwide. He is the author of the now classic; 'DRINKING LIGHTNING - Art, Creativity, and Transformation' from Shambhala Publications, Foreword by Ken Wilber, Preface by Ernst Fuchs, and 'PROMETHEAN FLAMES- Rekindling and Re-visioning the Creative Fire', from Betty & Books, Bologna, Italy (Summer 2008) Introductions by Prof. Michael Schwartz and Robin Sean Petersen. These first two books are an integral part of a Trilogy on art and consciousness that culminates in a forthcoming monumental tome entitled: 'Eyes of the Soul - Exploring Inspiration Art'. The artists currently resides in Arizona, USA and and accepts invitations to exhibit his work, commissions or paintings and some private students. Contact him at:

Most of the time I work with an almost forgotten old masters technique of painting called Mischtechnik (Mixed-Technique/German), used by many of the Rennaissance masters, was handed down from master to student over centuries. It was always in use in an unbroken chain, even if obscure and rarely taught at any art school or university. In the 20th c. the great desemination of this knowledge came from Pietro Anigonni, my mentor, Ernst Fuchs and his comrades of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Brauer, Lehmden, Hutter and Hausner. An artistic alchemy, it is a method of combining a water-based substance (usually egg emulsion and pigment-white) and a resin-oil based media in one painting; thus a painting done in Egg Tempera and Oil. In Van Eyck's technique the artist used multiple layers of transparent oil color glazes, underpainting and then alternating with white egg tempera applied for highlights. The introduction of oil combined with the tempera facilitated the rendering of very fine detail and realism, which became main characteristics of the Northern Renaissance. The artists of northern Europe quickly learned that the usage of oils enhanced the color of their pigments and gave them flexibility for creating larger works. The Mixed Technique became a mainstay for Dürer, Hans Holbein the Younger and other northern Masters. Most of Van Eyck's major works were painted in the 1430s. It was several decades later before his tempera and oil technique was adopted by Italian artists, notably by the Venetian master Giovanni Bellini . Italian artists soon were experimenting with their own recipes. Artists began adding litharge (white lead) to their glazes, which promotes oxidation and thus faster drying. Soon the introduction of the plant resins, Dammar and Mastic, allowed artists to simplify and speed up the process of completing a painting and to increase the binding of oil color and tempera and gain complete control over the opacity and transparency of oil colors.SEE: and
