During my visit to Yuyuan Gardens I couldn't help but be reminded of the great Swiss architect Le Corbusier's comment on New York: "A hundred times I have thought New York is a catastrophe, and fifty times: it is (See more)a beautiful catastrophe". Perhaps no city in the world does 'beautiful catastrophe' like Shanghai. Its unruly skyline clashing with an ancient architectural heritage results in a city reckoning with who it is and where it's going. Undoubtedly beautiful. Certainly something of a catastrophe.
