Erin Rae Isabella uses her artwork as a powerful medium for storytelling. Painting from the school of Abstract Expressionism, she uses color, texture, bold brushwork, and an intensely layered painting process to build a visual snapshot of a person or an event that leaves a viewer with a visceral and deep connection to the work.
The depth and complexity of applying color over color in a deliberate and nuanced way allows for completed pieces to convey the richly textured stories being told. Each layer is a vital part of the narrative being shared and although dozens or even hundreds of layers are hidden in the finished work, their presence is felt and seen on the finished surfaces.
Storytelling free of the constraints of figurative portrayals allows Ms. Isabella to tell often traumatic stories in a way that displays the transformative beauty that we can draw from not letting pain define us. By sharing narratives through an abstract expressionist process, her work allows for subjects to maintain privacy when desired. This ultimately inspires real engagement and the development of meaningful conversations around the topics explored such as domestic violence, rape, depression, and death.
