The things that surround us are transitory mirrors of ourselves. Creating their pictorial
portraits I present not only their physical externality, but I also preserve a certain symbol
of passing time.

ABOUT ME
Trying to penetrate outer layer of the visible world, we may experience the beauty in ordinary everyday life.
Everything and anything could become our teacher anytime as long as we go out to meet it with open eyes.
In  my paintings  I try to prove that the outside world, even in its least particles,
can be interesting and inspiring. What seems to be outwardly tiny and invisible acquires
significance if we realize that it is an inseparable part of the greater whole. Depicting
the civilizational waste, which common cardboard boxes have become, I intent to draw
attention to the meaning and hidden imaginary of things present in human life. The fascination
with the works of the 17th century Dutch painters, shows the path that led me to development of my painterly reflection on the passing.
The distinct inspiration for still life pictures the impulse, which made me introduce
symbolic elements such as minor items, vegetation or insects into my paintings.

EXPERTISE

Katarzyna Bąkowska-Roszkowska leads the viewer through the empty corridors, dark backstreets, uninhabited interiors in which nature – wild, not domesticated – appears in a surprising way. This surreal atmosphere accompanies all her paintings, where water and plants growing out of it, occupy a man-made cultural, material space.

Nearly seventy years ago, German scientist and theoretician Werner Heisenberg in his work “The Representation of Nature in Contemporary Physics”wrote: “For the first time in history man is in this world, having no other partner or opponent (...), we live in a world so completely transformed by man that everywhere (...) constantly we encounter the structures made by man, thus constantly somehow we meet only ourselves”.

Heissenberg's statement refers to the end of anthropogenesis announced at the beginning of the 1960's, thus the final and definitive victory of man over nature.

I think that Bąkowska-Roszkowska is perversely trying to tell us that the announcement of the death of nature was premature, and the process of the struggle commenced 30,000 years ago still exists and perhaps it is not nature but humanity who is at risk.

Looking at these works you cannot help but notice the great painting culture, the confidence and freedom in painting, after all, uneasy motifs. The pictures are kept in dark shades, sometimes only plants in the foreground are lit more; astonishing precision and huge dynamics of painting them. In some cases, an interesting effect of scaling is used: a man-made element – a shop pavilion, a car or a bus – is reduced, thus even more subordinate to plants.

These pictures are devoid of people, instead of them there is nature, filling abandoned structures and dominating over them...

In my opinion, the value of Kasia's works, however, involves avoiding literalism, trying not to force catastrophic or apocalyptic visions. The “Interventions of nature” presented by her happen slowly and in silence, with no spectacular special effects. But they are also dangerous and pose a vital force. This ambiguity, also referring to the very same style and manner of painting, is one of the biggest advantages of Kasia's art, and questions about the relationship between nature and culture remain valid and are of no less concern than in the past.
