Loope is my nickname and work signature; I am a mixed media artist. Each of my works is understood as the outcome of a specific circumstance defined mainly by the materials I gather to stage a dialogue, responses being given as a negotiation of the end result takes place. What remains is the evidence of this process. Having paper as main material, I explore its qualities, sometimes appealing to its resistance by cutting or tearing to reach hidden layers, overlaying or moulding it to create textures and volumes, or simply using it as surface to act on and interact with. Drawing is my way of balancing the mixed media work discipline with an interlude.
After a period of academic studies, with a degree in Fine Arts – Painting (2006) from the University of Évora, Portugal, and a specialization in contemporary art from the University of Vigo, Spain, with a master's in 2008 and doctorate in 2014, I've settled in São Miguel island, in the Azores, having since then worked as an independent curator and artist. In 2018 I opened Oficina, a ground floor space located in the center of Ponta Delgada that works as studio and art gallery, thus allowing me to develop my own creative work and also welcome and promote the work of other artists.
