Mehreen Hashmi, is the founder and curator of MH Initiatives, art consultant and practicing visual artist from Karachi, Pakistan. Born in 1985, Karachi, Mehreen has been working tirelessly while engaging with community, executing public art projects and exhibiting her own art work internationally. Curator at large, she has curated Pakistan’s first Karachi Art Summit in 2017. Her public art project ‘Munaqqash’ with I AM Karachi is also one of its kind in Pakistan which has been recognized by international authorities of The Heidelberg Project. With her passion of engaging general public and masses, she has curated several shows to support and promote young artists. She has initiated a non-profit project ‘Paywasta Reh Shajar Se’ to promote art education for children with challenging backgrounds such as addiction, lack of resources and childhood abuse. Her practice knows no boundaries, whether it’s a performance at a disputed land or an exhibition with hundred art works on display. She has been involving authorities i.e. Culture and Tourism Department, Government of Sindh in order to promote art scene of Pakistan.
From mentoring to motivating, she has been a great source of introducing art practices and creating awareness of involving people of all backgrounds outside artist community in Karachi. While curating and educating, Mehreen has been exhibiting her work locally as well as internationally. Her work is a depiction of her own struggle with development trauma, which also speaks for herself as well as other survivors has been approaching audience to develop awareness towards mental health. Recently, her work has been acknowledged by Dutch and Israel newspapers for a project titled 'Kite flying' by Hans Overvliet. She is an acting member of committee of recommendation for 'Stichting White Cube', a Dutch art organization. She has also received 'Millennial of Inspiration' award from Dawood Foundation.
She runs an online curated art gallery featuring artists from around the globe along with renowned and emerging artists from Pakistan.
