Bridget Modema Mayhew is a sculptress and multimedia artist in Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Much of her work is about correspondence: the relationship between object and self, the connection and causality. There are also elements of duality: the now and then: this is evident in the choice of material, the use of symbolism and conceptual thought.
The artist is also interested in how we as human beings connect with one another on a spiritual plane. Like a Shaman, she studies the energetic link that transforms when people engage with their environment.
The altered spray-paintings of Modema Mayhew are the first of a series of works begun in South Africa. They address the different perspectives people have when entering the same space and then how that state of mind can be altered once something is pointed out to them.
Modema Mayhew was born in Pretoria, South Africa, 1992. I studied Fine and Applied Arts at Tshwane University of Technology and finished in 2016. I achieved several awards such as Top 10 UJ Portrait Awards 2018, 1 st place sculptor, Affie- Artes, 2009, and Sanlam Trust Outeniqua Art and Culture Festival Award 1 st place, 2008 and have my work in major collections such as; Pretoria Art Museum as well as Department of Arts and Culture. My commitment to art took shape in apprentice work where I dedicated time for developing skills (2013- 2018). I apprenticed under Lothar Bӧttcher (Glass: Cold-shop, Mild steel), Smelt (Glass: Hot- shop), Johann Nortje (Mould making, Stainless Steel, Bronze) and Guy de Toit (Bronze). Today I have my own sculptural studio in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Glass, Steel and Bronze sculptures as well as mixed media (spray-paint, chalk, ink, pencil, charcoal) paintings.
