ABOUT ME

My art draws on my exploration and investigation into motifs of abuse, experience, language and identity. I use language in my art as a form of new cultural image dealing with a sense of helplessness and lack of being heard or understood.

BIOGRAPHY

Monica is an interdisciplinary visual artist, academic and filmmaker who deals with the motifs of identity, language, abject, and experience. She critically engages in all mediums with specialization in film, painting, sculpture, photography and installation. She holds a strong work ethos and has an engaging and friendly personality with a knack for easy explanations. She has highly developed critical writing skills and creatively uses language in her work. She researches artists daily in an ongoing free writing series that reaches 2k presence online. She is currently studying her Master’s degree in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria. She has competed nationally in the film division of PPC Imaginarium, and internationally with the 48 Hour Film Project Johannesburg. Her other passions lie in her freelance writing, running her photography business and creating art. She was asked by the Regional South African Burn Sentella to build their temple artwork ‘The Nest’ in 2018.
