Sculptor based in Nairobi. Completely passionate about public art, studio and workshop practice, creativity and experimental art, Collaborations and art talks. Put me any day in an equipped workshop, with all manner of tools and equipments.
My work is inspired by what goes on around me and the materials that I collect. I listen to the sounds of my tools a lot. I allow 'our' conversations to inspire the outcome of the final piece. I like working with very old wood and rustic metal. I combine metal and wood many times to create silent conversations between materials you take away from and ones you add onto. I deliberately allow my materials to sometimes dictate to me in my effort to master their language.
I am a Kenyan sculptor based in Nairobi. I work in various materials in both 2D and 3D. My career currently spans 22 years. Practicing as a full time artist at my studio, I have taken part in numerous exhibitions, workshops and residencies in Kenya, East African region, Algeria, Nigeria, Netherlands, USA and UK.
Since 2012 I have been involved in a number of public art projects, mainly as a consultant. These have included private art commissions. I am an experienced art project manager who enjoys making mundane spaces beautiful through art.
Maggie Otieno did not become one of Kenya’s leading artist and art entrepreneurs overnight. She has taken her time, first to figure out what specifically she wanted to do artistically, given that her studies at the Creative Arts Centre had made her an all-rounder and primarily a painter.
