I am an international, mixed media, abstract artist. I was born in Birmingham, Alabama to a family brimming with writers, poets, musicians, cooks and visual artists. My family strongly encouraged my imagination and creativity as a child. With that encouragement, I have found myself keenly aware of all the nuances in the world around me; nuances that have heavily influenced my art. I am heavily inspired by the colors and designs found in nature. I want people to see how utterly unique our natural world is and how design can come from tangible sources just outside of the door.
I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating art. I fell in love with the notion of becoming a “professional artist” while taking art classes my freshman year in high school. My Art teacher, Mickey Blackwell, had a huge influence on me. I began studying art in college, but changed my major to marketing when I began to feel constrained by the rules placed on my work in my art classes. I guess I didn’t want to be told how to create, so I taught myself how to paint through copying the greats and through experimenting in my studio. I started S.A. Maples Studio in 2013 after I had exhausted the corporate thing, the soul-searching thing, and the banging-my-head-against the-wall thing. I was an artist but was trying to earn a living doing things that I was not meant to do. Wasted from dissatisfaction, I decided that I was going to make my livelihood doing what I was meant to do all along; create art. It was the best decision I’ve ever made and I have not looked back for even a minute
